The Air Quality Flag Program

Each day, organizations of all kinds raise a flag to communicate the air quality forecast to their communities. The color of the flag matches EPA’s official Air Quality Index (AQI): green, yellow, orange, red, purple, and maroon.

Zoom and click on the map to find out who is flying an air quality flag today.

Why fly a flag?

Millions of people in the U.S. are exposed to unhealthy air every year.

Everyone can be harmed by unhealthy air - especially people with heart or lung problems, older adults, children & teens, and people who are active outside.

The Air Quality Flag Program helps people to take action to protect their health, while still keeping active, when air quality is unhealthy.

How is your air quality today?

Air quality can change throughout the day, just like the weather.

On airnow.gov, you can see both your air quality forecast and how air quality is changing during the day.

Flag Program participants fly the flag that matches the color of the air quality forecast for the day. The flag lets people know whether to expect unhealthy air each day.

Interact with the map by zooming in, zooming out and panning around to see how air quality has changed in the last 24 hours.

How has your air quality been?

Generally, air quality in the U.S. has improved over time.
